LUNCHTIME LECTURES with Carolyn Soutar

September-October 2017, Tuesdays 1pm – 2pm

Join Carolyn Soutar in the handsome, panelled Sitwell Library at Woodend for more enjoyable Tuesday lunchtime lectures.

A born and bred Londoner, fortunate enough to have a Scarborian mother, Carolyn Soutar returned to her roots in January 2017, and loves it.

Trained at LAMDA, Carolyn has worked in opera, ballet, straight theatre, large scale events and toured with orchestras. She is the author of The Real Nureyev (Mainstream), Dave Allen, the biography (Orion) and Staging Events, a Practical Guide, (Crowood).

Following her sold-out talk on Nureyev earlier this year, Carolyn shares more of her personal experiences of larger-than-life entertainers and theatre people with whom she has worked. Meet the stars "backstage" as Carolyn found and knew them.

Dave Allen (26 September)

The iconic Irish comedian everyone knew, 'the one who smoked and drank whisky', the one with a missing finger. A TV star of the 1970s. Also a deep thoughtful and very private man, with a love of ghosts, people and Chinese food! Carolyn has published a book about the Dave Allen she knew.

Peter O'Toole (3 October)

A powerful actor of exceptional beauty and charisma, who could hire and fire on a whim. Born in Leeds, not Ireland (surprised?). A nightmare to work with on stage. His drinking was legendary, until it nearly killed him. He truly lived on the edge. He was truly a Hell Raiser. With no apologies for that cliché.

PTouring Days (10 October)

From scenery arriving by gondola in Venice, to missed flights, earthquakes, hissy-fits and tantrums, share Carolyn's recollections of life "on the road", travelling the world from Billingham to Rio de Janeiro, from the sublime to the ridiculous.

Tickets £5 (£4 Senior Citizens, UB40s)

Book for series of three lectures at £12 (£10 Senior Citizens, UB40s)

As the available 40 places are usually taken, advance booking is strongly recommended! Real coffee available £1.50
